The universal structure of a good Reddit post

Every template below, regardless of type, is built on the same five-step order. Learn this once and you can build your own template for a post type that is not covered here.

1. Hook with the problem, not the product

The first two or three sentences are the moment or the pain, told plainly, before the reader has any idea a product exists. If a stranger could not tell what you are about to pitch from the opening lines, that is correct, not a mistake.

2. Give just enough context to make the hook land

One short paragraph on how you got here: what you tried before, what did not work, what you searched for and could not find. This is what makes the post read as a real account instead of a setup for a sales line.

3. Name the product once, late, low-key

The product shows up after the context, in one plain sentence, described by what it does rather than how great it is. One mention. Not the title, not the first line, not repeated three times for emphasis.

4. Include a real caveat

A limitation, a rough edge, or a case where your thing is not the right fit. Reddit trusts a post more, not less, when the author admits something is unfinished or wrong for some readers. It is also the single fastest tell that separates a person from a press release.

5. Close with a question you actually want answered

Not "thoughts?" and not "check it out." A specific question that only makes sense because you just told a specific story: what would you have done differently, has anyone else run into this, what would make this useful for your situation. The closing line is what turns a post into a thread instead of a link people scroll past.

The bracketed fields, explained once

These six fields show up across all five templates below. Knowing what each one is actually asking for saves you from filling it in with a placeholder-sounding answer.

[PRODUCT NAME]

Use the actual name, once. Do not repeat it three times to reinforce brand recall, that is what makes a post read as an ad.

[SPECIFIC PROBLEM]

Not a category ("productivity") but the actual thing that went wrong for you on an actual day. Specificity is what makes the hook believable.

[SUBREDDIT NAME / HOUSE VOICE]

A placeholder reminder to read the last 20 posts in your target subreddit before you fill anything in, so the tone matches what that community already sounds like.

[TIMEFRAME]

How long you have been building, testing, or living with the problem. Concrete numbers ("11 weeks", "since March") read as more honest than "recently" or "a while back".

[HONEST CAVEAT]

One sentence naming something your product does not do yet or someone it is not for. Every template on this page has a slot for this on purpose.

[CLOSING QUESTION]

The specific question that only makes sense after the story you just told. If you could paste this same question under a completely different post, rewrite it.

When to use it

Use this for a genuine "I built this" post: a working product, a first version, or a version you are proud enough of to put your name on. It is the format most founder subreddits expect for a launch, and the one most often ruined by leading with the product instead of the problem.

How to customize it

Swap in the real problem and a real number if you have one (time saved, a specific frustration, a count of how many times it happened to you). Decide where the link goes before you fill this in, see the link-placement section below, since several subreddits treat a link in the body differently than a link in a comment.

When to use it

Use this when you have a real, unresolved decision, not when you are fishing for validation of something you have already decided. This format works in general and founder subreddits alike because it does not require you to mention a product at all.

How to customize it

The value of this template is almost entirely in how specific the question and constraints are. A vague version ("how do I find customers") gets generic replies. A specific version ("do I charge monthly or annual-only for a $9 tool with a 40 percent trial-to-paid rate") gets the useful ones.

When to use it

Use this once you have something concrete to answer questions about: a launch, a milestone, a hard year, a specific range of revenue or users you are comfortable naming. An AMA with nothing behind it reads as an excuse to talk about your product and gets treated that way.

How to customize it

Check whether your target subreddit needs mod approval or a scheduled slot before you post an AMA. Several founder subreddits require lead time, sometimes measured in weeks, so this is not a same-day format. When to use it

Use this when you genuinely want critique on something specific, not general encouragement. Subreddits built around feedback (the ones whose whole purpose is reviewing side projects) are the best fit; general subreddits are stricter about anything that reads as a feedback request in disguise.

How to customize it

The three bullet points asking for specific feedback are the most important part of this template. "Is my pricing page confusing" gets you three useful answers. "What do you think" gets you three low-effort ones.

When to use it

Use this for a reflective post about your own journey: a mistake, a turning point, a lesson, something that happened rather than something you are announcing. Several founder subreddits have a specific flair for exactly this kind of post, separate from a promotional launch post.

How to customize it

The product, if it appears at all, should be incidental to the story, not the point of it. If a subreddit uses a flair convention that signals a reflective, non-promotional post, tag the post with it and mean it.

This is illustrative, a composite built to show how the fields get filled and then rewritten, not a real founder’s post. Notice the brackets are gone entirely, not just replaced word for word.

The finished title names a specific moment (a follow-up email sent to someone who already paid) instead of a category (invoice tracking is hard). That specificity is the entire difference between a filled-in template and a rewritten one.

Using a template without getting caught looking templated

Reddit users have seen enough founder posts to recognize a structure on sight. A template gets you the order of sentences that works. The rewrite is what makes it yours.

Do

Read the last 20 posts in your target subreddit and match the general tone before you fill in a template
Change the wording of every bracketed field into your own voice, not just the nouns
Cut any sentence that would read the same on your landing page
Keep the product mention to one line, stated plainly
End with a question you would actually want a stranger to answer

Post the template structure with only the product name swapped in
Reuse the identical filled-in post across multiple subreddits without rewriting it

How Reddit’s limits actually shape these templates

A post is either a link post or a text post, not both

Every template on this page is written as a text (self) post, with a [LINK] placeholder called out as a separate decision rather than baked into the body. That is deliberate. A link post uses the URL as the post itself, which is a different submission type from a text post with a markdown body, and a link post’s URL generally cannot be changed after it goes up. A text post can be edited afterward, which is one reason the templates above default to text.

Where the [LINK] field actually goes

Several subreddits filter or scrutinize links inside the post body more than links dropped in the first comment, which is why the launch and feedback templates flag link placement as its own decision instead of assuming a spot. Check the specific subreddit’s rules before you fill that field in, since some communities require the link in the post and others remove it there entirely.

Titles: 300 characters, and you cannot edit them later

Every title field above is written to be readable well under 300 characters, Reddit’s hard limit for post titles. Because a title cannot be edited after posting, get the specific problem or moment into it before you submit, not a placeholder you meant to tighten later.

Bodies: 40,000 characters of room, but subreddits set their own floor

A text post body can run up to 40,000 characters, far more than any template above needs once filled in, and unlike the title, a body can be edited after posting. Reddit has no sitewide minimum length, but individual subreddits enforce their own floor through AutoMod; for example, r/startups requires submissions of 250 or more characters.
